Karen’s legal experience extends to a wide range of business law matters including: business structures, corporate governance, purchase and sale of businesses, corporate reorganizations, employment agreements, shareholder agreements, lease agreements and a wide range of other corporate and commercial issues.
Karen is committed to service excellence. Her commitment is demonstrated by prompt, efficient and courteous interactions with clients as she leverages her expertise to deliver innovative solutions to their legal challenges.
Karen was born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia where she studied Political Science and Japanese Studies at the University of Victoria. In 1994 she left Victoria to attend the University of Western Ontario Law School where she met her husband and Magellan partner, Steve Fruitman. She articled at a small law firm in Hamilton, Ontario where she stayed upon her call to the Bar in 1999 to start a litigation practice. She practiced in the areas of personal injury insurance litigation and family law until leaving full time practice to start a family. She didn’t leave the law behind for long and when her first child was a mere three months old, she started working for a legal publisher summarizing legal judgments for a computerized legal database.
Karen continued to work as a researcher and writer while raising her two children, summarizing cases as well as writing for an Immigration Law reference manual and Halsbury’s Laws of Canada, the definitive general reference to Canadian law.
Karen and Steve have worked together to establish their corporate practice since Magellan opened its doors in August 2011. Steve and Karen share the same vision for a holistic approach to the provision of legal services and her skills and experience as a researcher make her an invaluable addition to Magellan’s business law practice.
Karen shares Steve’s love of cycling and has also participated in the B.C. Lung Association’s Bicycle Trek for Life & Breath, a 200 km ride through the Fraser Valley. Karen also enjoys running and has participated in the Sun Run. Karen has a long history of community involvement including acting as Vice-President and Chair of the Personnel Committee for Alternatives for Youth and President of the Meadow Montessori School Society.
